A Little About This Space

The City of London was under Roman occupation for an incredible fifth of its entire history. Allow yourself to be transported back to Roman rule for a glimpse of ancient history in this unique space - built around the remains of a wooden amphitheatre constructed in the 1st century AD. Up to 7000 spectators would gather to watch animal fights, gladiatorial combat, and public executions.

This unique space is an intriguing blend of ancient and modern. Glimpses of bloody Roman history are visible through glass panelled flooring, allowing you to step over the ruins of the amphitheatre. The newer parts of the space are understated and modern: simple white walls and light flooring are contrasted against the ancient ruins.

Discovered in 1985 during the redevelopment of the Guildhall Art Gallery, the ruins on display depict a fascinating era. Set between Bank and Moorgate, Guildhall is located within walking distance of some of the capital’s finest landmarks and tourist attractions, including St Paul’s Cathedral, the Museum of London, and the Barbican Centre.
