Beachside bohemia meets cutting-edge tech hub

Skateboarders with boomboxes dodging street musicians, influencers posing for selfies in front of street art, and yogis buying bone broth in the ultimate hipster health food store Erewhon - there’s never a dull moment in Venice. And despite sky-rocketing real estate prices in recent years, the bohemian, eclectic, carnival vibe here remains as distinctive and enthralling as the smell of incense on the boardwalk.

Dreamed up by the tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney in 1905 as the Disneyland of its day - complete with canals in homage to its Italian namesake - Venice Beach has always lured in the crowds. While tech companies such as Snapchat moving to town has brought new investment and upscale eateries, the henna hawkers and shops by the beach seem delightfully impervious to change.

Meanwhile, Venice’s most famous street, Abbot Kinney has become a destination for the hip and health-conscious. Its juice bars, independent boutiques and artisan coffee shops serve a steady stream of tourists, entrepreneurs and long-term locals alike.
