Gowanus has been looking pretty damn good lately. What used to be a famously filthy canal area has steadily been getting its act together, in part thanks to an influx of boutique hotels and upscale residencies. Case in point: this Union Street retail space, whose detailed iron exterior makes us wonder if it’s not moonlighting as some swanky SoHo boutique.
This part of South Brookyln wears contrast well. In other words, it’s home to places like Lucky 13 Saloon (self-described as “a low-key, heavy-metal bar”), a Yoga center, and a restaurant called Pig Beach with enough pit-smoked BBQ to make you think you’re a Texan. You won’t find any Times Square tourists here – just locals, and vintage clothing mavens who’ve crawled in from Williamsburg or Park Slope to do some Saturday spending. Get there by way of the Union St. subway stop, or park your wheels at the adjacent Citi Bike station.
You’re next door to MIRROR Tea House, Alba Auto Repairs Inc., and across the street from artisan ice cream geniuses, Ample Hills Creamery.
There’s a lot of tagging at spaces so near to the canal.
